Best Bandung Attractions

Bandung is the third largest city in Indonesia with a growing population of over 8.6 million. The temperatures in Bandung are typically cooler year-round than most other cities in Indonesia. The city is surrounded by volcanic mountains, which makes its soil ideal for the cultivation of tea, coffee, rice and tropical fruit.

Pre-1945, Bandung was an idyllic town, however, once Indonesia achieved independence it was transformed into a dense metropolitan city. The rapid increase in population led to great exploitation of natural resources. Despite the problems faced, Bandung continues to attract high numbers of tourists.

Residents of Jakarta are frequent weekend visitors to Bandung. They are attracted by the cooler temperatures, the wide variety of food and the cheap fashion found in factory outlets. Here are some of the best Bandung attractions to visit:

Kawah Putih (White Crater) Ciwidey

Kawah Putih is formed by the eruption of Mount Patuha. The soil mixed with sulfur around this crater is white and the water color is greenish white, creating a scenic view. Located at 2,400 meters above sea level, the temperature at Kawah Putih is a bit chilly so make sure to carry a jacket when visiting the area.

Tangkuban Perahu

Tangkuban Perahu is an active volcano situated 30 km north of the city of Bandung in Lembang. It has an altitude of 2,084 meters above sea level so similar to Kawah Putih, make sure you bring a jacket to visit this attraction. Unlike other volcanoes, the peak of Tangkuban Perahu is flat and elongated, making it appear like an inverted boat (how it got its name). Tangkuban Perahu has three three craters where tourists can walk through. These three craters are: Kawah Ratu (“Queen Crater”), Kawah Domas (“Domas Crater”), and Kawah Upas (“Upas Crater”).

Factory Outlets

A trip to Bandung wouldn’t be complete without visiting some of the well-known factory outlets. These factory outlets sell branded goods at a bargain as they are either export overruns, last season’s leftovers or rejects. Some of the famous outlets are Rumah Mode, The Secret, Heritage, Grande Fashion Gallery, and The Summit.

Prima Rasa Bakery

Lastly, just before you head back home, make sure to visit this famous Bandung bakery and buy some of Bandung snacks/cakes. This place is well-known for its brownies, Pisang Bolen (pastry with banana filling), and cheese sticks.

Whilst Bandung may not necessarily be the first holiday choice destination for many people; hopefully, after reading this low-down on the province, you will change your mind and get those reservations in early.
