The Abbey of Jumièges
Its white towers that rise to almost 50 meters deep in a loop of the Seine, always create the surprise and admiration of visitors. Its destruction in the nineteenth century earned him the "most beautiful ruin of France" and the image of an open website strongly marked romance.The Abbey of Jumièges is one of the oldest and most important Benedictine monasteries in Normandy.
Visit the exhibition « The Spirits of Places: Portraits of Those Who Lived Here » in Jumièges
Portraits evoke a place through time and across the events of history. They show the “characters” of those who lived in a certain place and who become superimposed over both the building and the landscape. And who are also the guarantors of the temporality of a place. These portraits of absentees depict monks (Barrès, Jacques Leclercq-K, Gonnet), princes and queens (Portalis, Fulpius), and are brought to a culmination by the work of Nils Udo. Here the art of the landscape – and the contemporary reversal in which the artist uses the landscape as both support and material for his work – forms a continuity of the landscape art of the Impressionists, which Monet was one of the first to transform.
