Today, transfer to the airport for your flight to Havana, the capital of Cuba and the largest city in the Caribbean. Upon arrival, enjoy a city tour of Old Havana, a favourite meeting point for locals to relax after a long day. View Christ of Havana, a massive marble statue of Jesus Christ that has become an icon of the city over the decades. After dinner, take a journey back in time at Morro Castle and enjoy watching the famous cannon blast ceremony, one of the oldest traditions of Havana. The sound of the cannonball was used to alert Habaneros of the presence of pirates and corsairs.
Meals: (Breakfast/Dinner)
DAY 4
Havana – Pinar Del Rio – Havana
After breakfast, transfer to Pinar del Rio, home to the world’s finest cigars. Visit a quaint tobacco farm, where most of the plantation work happens by hand. Next, venture into Cueva del Indio, a stunning and unique caverock formation. It was inside these caves that the Guanajatabey Indians built their primitive homes hollowed out of the limestone mogotes. As you walk in, observe the beauty of the limestone caves with very high ceilings. Towards the end of the trail, enjoy a motorboat ride and sail through the pristine underground waterway. Exit the cave and see one of the most iconic mogotes, Mural de la Prehistoria, a colourful wall painting that depicts the evolution of life in Cuba.
Meals: (Breakfast/Kiln Roast Pork Lunch/Dinner)
DAY 5
Havana – Trinidad
Today, go off the beaten path into the wilderness of Zapata Swamp, where the crucial battle between the Cuban army and US-sponsored parties happened. Visit Criadero de Cocodrilos, which houses hundreds of crocodiles separated in pools by age and species. Visit Laguna del Tesoro, also known as Treasure Lake, where you will take a speedboat ride to visit a Taino village replica.
Meals: (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
DAY 6
Trinidad
After breakfast, learn the bittersweet history of sugar trade and slavery. Go back in time to a glorious period of prosperity at Valley of the Sugar Mills, once the centre of the country’s flourishing sugar cane trade. Visit Manaca Iznaga and climb to the top of the tower for amazing views of the ample plantations below. Return to the city centre to explore Trinidad, the best-preserved colonial town of Cuba, filled with brightly coloured buildings and cobblestone streets. Stroll through Plaza Mayor, the historic centre of town and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit the Church of the Holy Trinity, which contains the Lord of the True Cross, an 18th-century wooden statue of Christ. Next, visit Romantic Museum, housing a small collection of decorative art that provides insight into Cuba’s colonial period. The museum also offers a look into the life of a rich slave master and the luxurious life of wealthy Cubans. Next, enjoy a local Cuban bar experience and try a refreshing Cuban cocktail or a canchanchara, a local speciality drink, at your own expense.
Meals: (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
DAY 7
Trinidad – Varadero
Depart for Santa Clara, home of the Che Guevara Mausoleum. The vast square is guarded by a bronze statue of Che Guevara that was erected in 1987 to mark the 20th anniversary of his murder in Bolivia. The mausoleum contains 38 stone-carved niches dedicated to the other guerrillas who fell in the failed Bolivan revolution. Next, proceed to Varadero, one of the largest resort areas in the Caribbean.
